Carney becomes Bank of England Chief

Despite continual denials that he had no intention of running for Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney (Governor of the Bank of Canada) has become the next Governor of the Bank of England.

The Bank of England breaks centuries old tradition by hiring a foreigner from the colonies (only from Cana-der, eh) to take on the distinguished role. It didn't take very long for the British Telegraph newspaper to start making  jokes about Canadians (in a light hearted sort of way).

Canadians are good sports and we were relieved to find out that the Brits seem to have marginally more knowledge of Canada than their American journalist counterparts. Yes, Canada was a former colony. Hard hitting journalism indeed!

South of the border, Americans are a bit surprised at the appointment ( whoa, a Canadian? from Canada?) but we did manage to rate a postage stamp headline on the bottom half of the page.

[Editor’s note: I think that Mark would have made a far better Treasury Secretary.]
